Request for European ban on Nazi insignia

Brussels, 17/01/2005 (Agence Europe) - Following the scandal caused by Prince Harry wearing a swastika at a fancy-dress party, German MPs asked last weekend for a Europe ban on Nazi insignia to be introduced. They called on the Council to deal with the issue at the informal Ministers of Justice and the Interior meeting on 27-29 January in Luxembourg. The presidency will not put the subject on the agenda but does intend relaunching at a work group level discussions on the framework decision proposal on racism and xenophobia. The question of a ban on wearing the swastika could be brought up in this context, indicated a diplomat. The framework decision was buried following the opposition in Italy but also due to the deep-seated division of principle between Member States (EUROPE 1 May 2003). European Commissioner Franco Frattini is prepared, if the Council requests him, to study the possibility of such a ban EU-wide of Nazi insignia, indicated his spokesperson. He is also hoping to relaunch discussions on the framework decision on racism and xenophobia.
