Strasbourg, 12/01/2005 (Agence Europe) - On 11 January at the European Parliament in Strasbourg the Luxembourg minister for European Affairs Nicolas Schmit, vice-president of the European Commission Margot Wallström (in charge of communications) and the vice-president of the European Parliament Alejo Vidal-Quadras signed a memorandum of understanding on the co-ordination and organisation of action promoting information on the European Union. "I could not have hoped for a better start" in my new job declared Ms Wallström at this even, noting that other Member States were queuing up to conclude similar agreements.
The memorandum, a political document, does not impose any legally binding constraints and was concluded four years and can be renewed. Until now Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and Greece have signed similar agreements with the European institutions. Several of the new Member States intend to sign too.
