Lifting of restrictions on Argentinian bovine meat

Brussels, 12/01/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday evening the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (made up of representatives from Member States) decided to lift measures in application since September 2003 (EUROPE 11 September 2003) suspending bovine meat imports into the EU from certain regions in Argentinean affected by foot and mouth disease. The embargo involves the following areas: Ramon Lista (in the province of Fomosa); General José de San Martin Rivadavia, Oran, Iruya and Santa Victoria (in the province of Salta). No new outbreaks have been reported since then and the situation is back to normal, explained the Commission. the Argentinean authorities reported an outbreak of food and moth disease in September 2003 in one of the localities in the Salta province, near the border with Paraguay and Bolivia. They responded swiftly by vaccinations and a ban on transporting bovine animals.
