Committee seeking cautious approach

Brussels, 22/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - During an extraordinary meeting of its Office on 21 October in The Hague, the Committee of the Regions of the EU voiced support for a cautious approach on the possible setting up of a pre-accession consultative committee with Turkey. Committee president Peter Straub stated in a press release that, “We should not go faster than the Union and we should wait and see how things develop”(speaking at the European Council on 17 December). While admitting that in the past Europe had made “too many promises that it had not kept”, Straub considered that the Committee should not be the first off the mark, “even if I believe that dialogue should be deepened with the regional and local authorities of candidate countries”. According to Ramon Luis Valcarcel Siso, president of the Committee's external relations commission, CoR has to create a mixed committee if the European Summit is going to give the European green light to such a committee with Turkey after the past ten years.
