07/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - On the eve of the ASEM Summit which opens on Friday in Hanoi, 109 MEPs launched an appeal to have the question of human rights at the heart of the discussions. In a letter addressed to Jean-Claude Juncker, who is to chair the EU delegation in Hanoi (yesterday's EUROPE, p.9) as well as to the Dutch EU Presidency and to the President of the European Commission, the signatories of every political colour demand the immediate and unconditional release of Thich Huyen Quang, the Executive Director of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam, as well as of Thich Quang Do and of six other dignitaries of the Church.
