22/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - Tomorrow, Eurostat will publish the revised figures of public deficits in the Member States, of which the ones for Greece are greatly anticipated. In a declaration adopted at the informal Council in Scheveningen, the finance ministers insisted that the Greek government improve its system of statistics. Calling the veracity of the information transmitted by Athens into question, the ministers voiced their hopes that the country would soon offer "a clear and correct image of its situation". More generally, the Council called upon the Commission to make a proposal on the minimum standards for statistics, by June 2005. When asked about this during his exchange with MEPs (see above), Jean-Claude Trichet said that this was a "colossal problem" and that they should "work hard to achieve credible figures". In the case of Greece, it appears that the way military expenditure has been included in the calculations could be at fault, he said.
