16/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament, adopting the report by Jean-Louis Bourlanges (ALDE, France) on Thursday under the emergency procedure, as requested by the Council, approved the proposed Council regulation to allow assets belonging to persons, groups and organisations which assist those accused of war crimes in the former Yugoslavia to escape justice to be frozen. In his observations on these restrictive measures to support the effective implementation of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, which completes the joint position of the Council of the EU, the rapporteur noted that the regulation recognises "a significant role for the European Commission, which should in particular update the list of persons whose assets should be frozen".
