Brussels, 09/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - The Dutch Foreign Minister, Bernard Bot, has warned against bringing the Iranian nuclear affair before the UN Security Council (as the United States in particular are calling for), as he feels that this decision could spell the end of inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in the country. If the affair goes before the Security Council, Iran will send the IAEA inspectors home, even if no sanction is ruled upon, said Mr Bot during a debate in the Dutch Parliament on Wednesday. "This would be the end of the inspections", he said. According to Mr Bot, Iran is prepared to work with the IAEA and provide written assurances that it will not use enriched uranium for military purposes. The Dutch minister received the man in charge of Iran's nuclear policy, Hassan Rohani, in The Hague this week (in his capacity as president of the Council of the EU), and he and Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende were assured that the IAEA inspectors may carry out their duties in Iran 24 hours a day. The Iranian issue is to be discussed by the EU foreign ministers at next Monday's General Affairs Council (13 September).
