Brussels, 09/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - The Union of European Federalists (UEF), Europe Group, is putting forward ideas to José Manuel Barroso to guarantee a certain "multinational" balance in the composition of the Commission's cabinets. The group said that they thought that there was a real danger that the Commission would become a second Committee of Permanent Representatives (Coreper) on the inside of which national interests could prevail over the common interest of the EU. The UEF brings together officials from all the European institutions. It also recommended that the cabinet of a Commissioner consists of up to three collaborators from the same Member State (including secretaries). Cabinets that respect these criteria should have the right to an additional staff member (assistant), suggests the UEF.
