30/08/2004 (Agence Europe) - In an interview with the French weekly magazine, Le Point, on 26 August, the Vice-President of the CDU-CSU party in the Bundestag, Wolfgang Schauble, has repeated his opposition to Turkey joining the EU, focussing on the CDU-CSU's proposed alternative, a 'privileged partnership' instead. Turkey wants to become a full member of the EU, but is prepared to take other options into account, like a privileged partnership, said the CDU leader, adding that he was sure that once Turks fully understood the implications of full membership of the EU in terms of their country's autonomy and national sovereignty, many people will vigorously oppose membership. He said that if the EU decided in December to launch negotiations with Turkey, the CDU wanted both options - full membership and the privileged partnership - to be clearly considered right from the start.
