NATO "encourages" members to help Iraq transform its army - support for provisional sovereign government as from Monday

Brussels, 28/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - NATO member countries made a commitment on Monday at the Istanbul summit to help Iraq train its army, following intense diplomatic wrangling that finished up with a declaration that was in fact quite modest. Just before the opening of the summit, a significant number of NATO members wee taken by surprise by the announcement of the transfer of sovereignty by US forces to the provisional Iraqi government.
