European Movement Belgium makes suggestions for 2009 elections

Brussels, 23/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - Disappointed by European elections whose election campaigns were dominated by national issues, the board of the European Movement Belgium has already had some thoughts about initiatives for the European elections of 2009. In a press release, its President Charles-Ferdinand Nothomb notes that the recent elections were once again marked by "candidates standing who have absolutely no intention of taking up their seats in the European Parliament", and "the fact that the work carried out by outgoing members was not used to the full". He suggests that at the next European elections, 5% of the MEPs should be elected on a common list, rather than nationally. The European Movement announces that is will invite "European federations to debate rules to be set up" to this end.

European Movement Belgium has also indicated that it will organise "a broad-based explanation of the decision-making mechanisms" of the European Union, as provided by the European Constitution, "without waiting for it to be ratified".
