Brussels, 17/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday the Commission appointed Mr Walter Deffaa (Germany) Director General of the Internal Audit Service (IAS). To meet the new challenges of the IAS (enlargement and tasks of the Community agencies for instance) the Commission has named Mr Francisco Merchán (Spain) to the post of Director in the newly-formed Audit Process Directorate.
Mr Deffaa, 53 years old, has wide-ranging experience in various Commission departments, including budgetary and audit matters. Over the last four years, notably in budget and financial management. He was also Director in the Regional Policy Directorate General. Mr Merchán, a 47-year old Commission official joined the Commission in 2000, after more than 20 years as an auditor with major multinational companies. His most important assignments have included a major internal audit of EUROSTAT.
