Commission to present ideas on Monday to make fishing more marine eco-system friendly

Brussels, 17/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - On Monday the European Commission is expected to adopt a communication from Commissioner Franz Fischler on developing methods for fishing that are more marine eco-system friendly by particular attention being paid to conservation techniques. The Objective of the strategy is: to make fishing operations as selective as possible (to fish only for so-called "target" species and reduce at the same time the number of rejects); decrease the damages caused to sea beds by fishing gear; plan next structural fund programming for fishing, new aids to encourage fishermen to adopt more environmentally friendly methods. The Commission is also planning to launch a pilot project in 2005 to attempt to settle the problem of fish caught in so-called "ghost nets" (lost at sea).
