Results in Netherlands, Lithuania and Malta

Brussels, 17/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - The following is a definitive list of MEPs elected in the Netherlands, after the counting up of votes (preferential system), as well as the results from the European elections in Lithuania and Malta.

Netherlands

In the Netherlands, the results of the number of seats obtained were know a week ago but the official preferential vote counting had to be awaited in order to provide the names of the MEPs elected. Several candidates benefited from preferential voting. This was particularly the case for the outgoing MEP Ria Oomen-Ruijten. The following is the complete list of the members of the new Dutch delegation at the European Parliament (the names of the newly elected MEPs are underlined):

CDA (Christian democrat): 7 MEPs: Camiel Eurlings, outgoing Maria Martens, Albert Jan Maat, Ria Oomen-Ruijten, Lambert Van Nistelrooij, Corien Wortmann-Kool, Bert Doorn. Bartho Pronk, who has been an MEP since 1979, was not re-elected.

PvdA (social-democrat): 7 MEPs: Max van den Berg, Edith Mastenbroek, Jan Marinus Wiersma, Emine Bozkurt (37) of Turkish origin who benefited from preferential voting, Dorette Corbey, the journalist Thijs Berman, outgoing Ieke van den Burg.

VVD (liberal): 4 MEPs: Jules Maaten, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, Jan Mulder and Toine Manders.

Groen Links (Greens): 2 MEPs: outgoing Kathalijne Buitenweg and Joost Lagendijk.

Christen Unie-SGP: 2 MEPs: outgoing Hans Blokland and Bastiaan Belder.

Socialistische Partij (left): 2 MEPs: Erik Meijer and Kartika Liotard (33), legal expert.

Europa Transparant: 2 MEPs: Paul Van Buitenen and Els De Groen (55), French teacher, author of numerous books for children and on the Balkans. Ms De Groen is also an anti-nuclear activist.

D'66 (centre): Sophie In'T Veld is re-elected.

Lithuania

The European elections were less noticeable due to the forthcoming presidential elections. Lthe Populis Labour Party Darbo Partija, which had never been in an election before and which to an extent was the overall winner with 5 of the 13 Lithuanian seats.

Darbo Partija (labour/populist): 5 MEPs: Sarunas Birutis, Danuté Budreikaite, Arunas Degutis, Jolanta Dickute, Ona Jukneviciene.

Tevynès Sajunga (conservative): 2 MEPs: Laima Andrikiené and the former president Vytautas Landsbergis.

LSDP (social-democrat): 2 MEPs: Vincas Paleckis and Aloyzas Sakalas.

Liberalu ir Centro Sajunga (liberal): 2 MEPs: Eugenijus Gentvilas and Margarita Starkeviciuté.

VNDPS: Kazimira Prunskiené.

Liberalu Demokratu Partija (centre left): Rolandas Pavilionis.

Malta

With 49% of the votes, the Labour Party opposed to European integration won the election and 3 Maltese seats at the Maltese European Parliament. The nationalist party obtained 40% and two seats. The Greens made a remarkable breakthrough with 10% of the vote but did not gain any MEPs.

Partit Laburista: 3 MEPs: John Attard Montalto, Luis Grech and Joseph Muscat.

Partit Nazzjonalista: 2 MEPs: Simon Busuttil and David Casa.
