Brussels, 18/05/2004 (Agence Europe) - Ahead of the EU/Turkey Association Council of 18 May in Brussels (see other article), the International Federation of Human Rights Leagues (FIDH) has acknowledged in a press release that the Turkish government "is undeniably putting into place an intense policy of legislative reforms with a view to adopting the Community acquis", and that the Turkish Parliament has ratified several European and national Treaties, but at the same time it is "seriously concerned" by the systematic violation of "many human rights" in Turkey. It refers to the situation for human rights proponents, continuing acts of torture, despite the State's undertaking to carry out a "zero tolerance" policy (torture takes "more sophisticated forms, which are difficult to detect"), the State Security Court, violations of detainees' rights, the situation for minorities (especially Kurds), which "remains dramatic" despite "some progress", the denial of the Armenian genocide, the "fragilisation of civil society".
