During a brief debate on the enlarged EU and the European Area of Freedom, Security and Justice, on Tuesday evening, European Commissioner Antonio Vitorino sought to allay the fears of those who say that the wide new enlargement could make Europe less secure and more permeable to international crime. On the contrary, he recalled, we have helped and we shall continue to help the new Member States combat this phenomenon. Speaking of the fear that there will be a massive wave of immigrants from Eastern European countries to the fifteen countries, Mr Vitorino recalled that, according to a Commission study, around 1% of the new EU citizens would, in the next five years, use the possibility of going to work in one of the older Member States, i.e. less than 220,000 persons in a Union of 450 million inhabitants. The Commissioner for Justice and Home Affairs also announced a Commission communication which makes an estimate of the work accomplished in this field over the last five years, and spoke of guidelines for future priorities.
