THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/commission

26/03/2004 (Agence Europe) - Speaking to the press after the European Council, Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker was quite explicit in restating that he would not be a contender for the post of European Commission president. He said that, yes, the question has already been put to him and that, if he had "said yes, the matter would be settled". He went on to explain that he has chosen to run for general elections in Luxembourg (on the 13th day, the same day as European elections) and said: "In my view, there is an elementary requirement in politics: If one is a candidate in an election, one tells people what one wants to do after the elections, what one's career plans are". Mr Juncker went on to conclude: "I want to remain Prime Minister, if it is decided thus by universal suffrage. I have told my citizens so".
