EU's priorities for 60th session of United Nations Commission on Human Rights

Brussels, 23/03/2004 (Agence Europe) - The European Union is to present resolutions on the death penalty, children's rights and religious intolerance to the sixtieth session of the United Nations' Commission on Human Rights. In conclusions adopted on Monday, the General Affairs Council set these subjects, together with the countries about which the European Union will propose the adoption of resolutions at this session, which will take place in Geneva from 15 March to 23 April: Russia (Chechnya), Burma/Myanmar, North Korea, Congo, Sudan, Zimbabwe, the Israeli colonies in the occupied territory. Together with the United States, the EU will propose resolutions on Turkmenistan and Belarus. The EU "will work with the governments of Colombia and East Timor to ensure that the Presidency's declarations on the human rights situation of these countries are adopted". The Council stresses in its conclusions that although the EU has engaged in dialogue on human rights with China and Iran, this "does not rule out" the possibility of the Commission on Human Rights examining the situation in these countries. The Council points out the EU's opposition to the "non-action" motions, "which run counter to the spirit of dialogue which should prevail" at the Commission on Human Rights. It is worth noting that these motions allow the Commission on Human Rights to avoid pronouncing itself on a resolution.
