Brussels, 23/03/2004 (Agence Europe) - In the context of the Irish Presidency, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and Ireland's National Economic and Social Council (NESC) are organising, on 6 and 7 April in Dublin, a conference on the theme "Public services: role of civil dialogue in the provision of quality economic and social services". Participants at this conference will include the Irish Minister of Communications, Maritime Affairs and Natural Resources Dermot Ahern, EESC President Roger Briesch, NESC Dermot McCarthy, Vice-President of the Economic and Social Committee of Luxembourg Raymond Hencks, EESC Rapporteur on public services Bernardo Hernandez Bataller (Secretary General of the association of communications users, Spain) as well as a large number of representatives of other economic and social councils. The conference will tackle the European dimension of the debate on effective public services as well as experience gained at national level regarding their development. It will also examine the question of public service efficiency in the social field (health, education, employment) and network sectors (energy, telecommunications, transport and water).
