Brussels, 15/03/2004 (Agence Europe) - Last Friday Chancellor Schröder announced that he would be meeting the Polish prime minister Leslek Miller on 23 March in Warsaw to try and obtain a compromise on issues blocking the adoption of a European Constitution (notably the problem of the voting system at the Council). According to Gerhard Schröder a solution will not be easy but is possible. The president of the European Council Bertie Ahern appealed on Friday for the system of double majority (countries and populations) to be supported, which has so far been rejected by Spain and Poland. Ahern noted that this option had been chosen by most Member States. After a meeting on the same day in Paris with president Chirac, the president of Latvia Vaira Vike-Frieberg informed the press that they had agreed that it was too much for the Irish presidency to conclude during its time in office. According to AFP, the Latvian president explained that she wanted to explain the position of future new member that want to have their own European Commissioner as it was necessary to be a part in order to understand how it worked.
