"Personaaggio Europeo" is launched

Brussels, 01/03/2004 (Agence Europe) - How can the interest of European youth be stimulated with regard to EU enlargement and in particular, how can they get to know the culture of the ten future Member States better? This is the question posed by the city of Genoa (Italy), European capital of culture 2004. Supported, notably, by the "Centro in Europa" and the European Commission bureau in Rome, Genoa has decided to launch a multimedia information action in the form of an interactive game for journalism and communication students. During the official launch at the EP in Brussels, Carlotta Gualco, director of the "Centro in Europa" explained that the main objectives of the game were to promote knowledge of the ten new Member States, as well as action in the field of culture.

During the press conference in Brussels in which participants included MEP Demetrio Volcic and the Head of communications from Genoa, Anna Catellano, Carlotta Gulaco presented the project's "Council of "Personalities", which included writers Fernanda Pivano, Edoardo Sanguineti and Carlo Freccero, actresses Mariangela Melato and Franca Rame, Polish footballer Zibi Boniek and MEPs Demetrio Volcic and Jas Gawronski.

The game will be on-line in April. Players will have to combine the names of famous people from the ten future Member States with their home countries. The list of famous people will be updated by the "Council of Personalities" from the project, together with ambassadors from the new Member States, who will choose the names from the cultural arena, show business, sport and politics. 65 countries will be asked about the selected personalities. The winner will receive a prize in mid-May in the form of a trip to one of the ten new Member States of their choice where they will also meet representatives from the academic and teaching fields (info: http://www.ilperonaggioeuropeo.it ).
