THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/berlin summit

09/02/2004 (Agence Europe) - Answering reporters' questions on the Franco-German-British summit of 18 February in Berlin, European Council President Bertie Ahern said that this kind of meeting did not pose any problem as the three countries have many issues of common interest to be discussed and the more they improve their relations the better it will be. What is important, the Irish Prime Minister said last Friday in Dublin after a meeting with the Norwegian Prime Minister, Kjell Magne Bondevik, is that, in the EU, decisions are taken collectively. European Commissioner Mario Monti, who was in Frascati for a seminar organised by Alleanza nazionale, is reported by the ANSA agency to have said: "We can move forward at two speeds on individual issues but not on the rules relating to the way the Union works". In his view, one cannot prevent three-way meetings of the kind in Berlin and neither should one "protest too much" when they take place. Furthermore, Mr Monti said he was "perplexed about the hypothesis of a counter-summit between Italy, Poland and Spain", suggested by the press.
