Commission arraigns three member states before Court

Brussels, 22/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - Last Wednesday, the European Commission decided to arraign three member states before the Court of Justice of the Communities for failure to transpose legislation in the field of transportation. The Commission accuses France and Ireland of not providing information on the national measures taken to transpose the 2002 directive relating to pressurised equipment under transportation (EUROPE of 20 December 2002, on the previous stage of the procedure) as well as the directive adapting the latter to technical progress. The member state should adopt this legislation before 1 January 2003.

The Commission also filed a new recourse against Belgium, as the latter must still take the necessary measures to transpose the Community rules on the authorisation for occupation of roads by road operators. Belgium was already condemned by the Court on 6 June 2002 over this dossier and this time, the Commission is calling on the Court to impose heavy fines.
