New programme for biological diversity

Brussels, 22/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - On Monday, the European Commission adopted a proposal on the establishment of a second Community programme for the conservation, collection and use of genetic resources in agriculture. The new programme, which will cover the 2004-2006 period, will enjoy a Community subsidy totalling EUR 10 million. This programme has the main objective of encouraging the development of new cross-border initiatives and avoiding the duplication of activities. This programme concerns the creation of online decentralised inventories, permanent and widely accessible, gathering knowledge on the genetic resources of plants and animals living in the EU, including their origins and their characteristics.
