Brussels, 22/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - Last Friday, the new Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin and the President of the European Commission Romano Prodi held a first set of telephone meetings during which they notably discussed the preparations for the EU-Canada summit planned for 2004 under the Irish Presidency indicated the Canadian Representation to the European Union. Let us recall that this summit should have taken place on 17 December in Ottawa so that the exiting Prime Minister Jean Chrétien could once more take part in the regular meeting, but which was cancelled as Silvio Berlusconi had to go to the European Parliament that day: see EUROPE of 22 November, p. 4. Moreover, Mr Martin welcomed the declaration on transatlantic relations adopted on 12 December by the European Council in Brussels.
