EP follows Council line and adopts take-overs directive making shareholders' agreement "optional" on defensive measures - Council and Bolkestein not happy

Brussels, 16/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament has followed the Council's line by adopting the report of Klaus-Heiner Lehne on Tuesday, on take-overs (321 votes for, 219 against and 9 abstentions). Amendments form the Socialist and GUE/NGL groups to strengthen consultation of workers was thrown out (281 votes against, 268 for, with 2 abstentions). This draft was negotiated between the EP and the Council and should be adopted in a single reading.
