Brussels, 11/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - In a speech in Rome on 9 December during competition day, Commissioner Mario Monti, responsible for competition, underlined the need for reforming the liberal professions' sector. He described this sector as one of the most regulated in the European economy. Mr Monti pointed out that the current consultation procedure should allow for an overall view of the situation and allow for possible means of taking action. With this aim, the commissioner announced the publication of a report in the coming months, in which the Commission would underline the economic reasons underpinning its desire to reform rules in force. Monti declared that, "It is possible that the report will suggest action to take…in connection with rules or specific regulation. This report on competition in these professions will be an instrument available to Member States and the professions concerned". The Commission pointed out that the goal was not to introduce harmonisation of the rules or put an end to necessary regulation on a certain protection of these professions but to get rid of aspects that prevent the consumer from making a free choice at reasonable prices.
