Paris, 25/11/2003 (Agence Europe) - According to AFP, during a colloquium organised by European Commissioner Michel Barnier in Paris on transatlantic relations, AFP proposed the creation of a Euro-American reflection group to avoid the risk of "divorce" between the two sides of the Atlantic. In his view, this group could be formed of around fifteen people chosen by the US President and the European Council. Daniel Fried, Adviser to President Bush for European issues, mainly assured that no-one within the US Administration has problems of principle on a strong European defence, but that Europe should focus on capabilities rather than on "symbols" (an allusion to a European headquarters. "To breathe new breath into the Alliance, European defence is needed", Guy Verhofstadt said, while Javier Solana felt Euro-American differences can be overcome by concrete cooperation in several key areas.
