Loans for education, information technology and environment

Luxembourg, 21/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Investment Bank (EIB) has just concluded new financing contracts totalling Eur 235 million for investments in the education and information technology (ICT) sector. These loans are granted under the Bank's present pre-accession mechanism. A loan of Eur 200 million will contribute towards the construction and modernisation of primary and secondary schools, as well as towards the creation of ICT materials in schools. Another loan of Eur 35 million, will contribute towards the financing of a project for the modernisation of public service information systems in the country. Furthermore, the Bank has announced that it will soon grant non-refundable aid totalling Eur 530,000 under the technical assistance programme for the protection of the Mediterranean environment. A subsidy of Eur 350,000 is foreseen for the updating of the master plan relating to the Nicosia sewerage, another of Eur 180,000 has been programmed for the updating of the master plan for the sewage system of Limassol.
