20/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - At a proposal from Bavaria, the Bundesrat called on the German government last Friday to defend the main interests of the Länder at the IGC. Bavarian Minister Erwin Huber said they did not wish the EU to decide "how many people would emigrate to Germany in the future, and which people (…). Neither is it possible for the quality of our water to suffer because of provisions set out in Brussels. This is precisely what would happen if the EU were responsible for services of general interest". His went on to criticise the fact that: "the draft Convention was amended from the very first negotiations, and in other Member States a series of themes to be discussed have been raised", while the German government clearly refuses to do this, which will make it more difficult for citizens to accept the European Constitution.
