Brussels, 06/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - Farmers are hoping for "fair trade framed by clear rules" and not "blind free trade" out of the negotiations on the Doha Development Agenda in Geneva, says Chairman of the Committee of Agricultural Organisations in the EU (COPA). Peter Gaemelke, speaking in Paris on Thursday as part of a conference on the balance of power in agriculture, hoped to set the record straight post-Cancun: "abolishing all agricultural support is no magic solution to all the evil in this world" because "not all agricultural support is alike and not all subsidies distort trade to the same extent". "WTO negotiations are not about dismantling agricultural policies or removing all farm subsidies, (but) ensuring that trade between countries can take place without distortions", whilst allowing "real" developing countries- "behind which advanced developing countries, such as Brazil, should stop hiding" to protect their markets from imports, which could undermine their prices", he said.
