Broad agreement on main international current affairs dossiers

Brussels, 06/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - Europeans and Canadians noted a "broad agreement" on the main points of international political affairs, this Monday at the ministerial meeting in Rome that was held as part of the bi-annual meetings of the Permanent Transatlantic Dialogue. Discussions between Canadian chief diplomat Bill Graham and Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, Commissioner Chris Patten and High Representative for CFSP, Javier Solana covered current events in the Middle East, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran and North Korea (non-proliferation), and the field of human rights and security (European strategy). The Italian Presidency highlighted the fact that this meeting, which took place two months before the forthcoming bilateral Summit (17 December 2003 in Ottawa), afforded "the opportunity to reinforce and improve the existing excellent co-operation between Brussels and Ottawa". "Transatlantic relations are fundamental to ensuring peace, stability and prosperity in the world", said the Canadian Foreign Minister, also referring, "in this period which is marked out by sustained international tensions" to the need to work "more closely than ever to ensure the efficacy of multilateral solutions to the challenges presented by Iraq, North Korea and the Middle East". Mr Graham also hoped to speak to his United Nations reform counterparts, to inform them of the mobilisation effort Canada is preparing to deploy for humanitarian interventions, said a European source in Brussels. Ten years on from the genocide in Rwanda, this country, which is just as committed to the EU's multi-lateralism, wants to make the international Community aware of the need to develop an arsenal of rules for UN emergency intervention in the internal affairs of a State, despite the principle of non-interference, when it is a case of protecting civil populations caught in the crossfire of national forces at war.
