Javier Solana expresses concern about reform process

Brussels, 24/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - According to AFP, in an interview granted to a Bosnia-Herzegovina daily published on Wednesday, Javier Solana, EU High Representative for CFSP, expressed concern about the reform process in progress in the country and called upon the Bosnian people to speed up reforms so that they do not lag behind in the process of European Union integration. "Europe will monitor Bosnia very closely this autumn. If you choose reforms, the doors of Europe will be open to you", he told the daily, Dnevni Avaz, as a sign of encouragement. Mr Solana also said he was "highly concerned" about the risk that the military reform in the country would fail. "Failure would seriously harm the reputation of Bosnia-Herzegovina", he said. Paddy Ashdown, the EU Special Representative for Bosnia-Herzegovina, also expressed his concern about the military reform under way in the country - which conditions the country's accession to NATO's Partnership for Peace - notably due to the divergence between the leaders of the three communities (Muslim, Serb and Croat).
