28/08/2003 (Agence Europe) - Elected on the Lista Bonino, Olivier Dupuis calls on the EU Council for its opinion on the peace plan put forward by Chechen Foreign Minister Ilyas Akhmadov, who proposed the establishment of a provisional UN administration in Chechnya. The MEP points out that 75% of Russians, who expressed their views on this during a recent Moscow radio programme, Echo Mosky, were in favour of such a solution. Although this is not a scientific survey, it is yet another "undeniably significant indicator of the mood of the Russian population", Mr Dupuis said. He asks the Council whether it believes a provisional United Nations administration in Chechnya would, "as in Kosovo, allow the rule of law and democracy to take root over the next few years and therefore contribute to creating the best antidote to any extremist aberrations".
