THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/constitution/religion

26/08/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Comunione e Liberazione (CL) movement affirmed during its meeting in Rimini on Monday that the future European Constitution should be rejected if it does not contain an explicit reference to the Christian roots of the European edifice. Silvio Berlusconi gave his assurance in an interview with the Verona fedele paper cited by Corriere della Sera that he would do everything he possibly could, while warning: "I realise that, with Italy, there is only Spain, Ireland and Portugal" that want such a reference. Therefore, it remains to be seen how this can be achieved by "four against twenty-one", the European Council President said. During the meeting in Rimini, former Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti stated: "I do not underestimate the value of a formal reminder (…) but in the treaty it is the substance that is important, and a reference to Charlemagne or to Judeo-Christian roots could create difficulty in dialogue with other cultures".
