Brussels, 26/08/2003 (Agence Europe) - In Geneva on Tuesday evening, trade experts from the current EU Member States and the ten future Member States (the 133 Committee) are expected to approve the revised list of the thirty or so geographical indications protected at EU level that the EU wants to be recognised the other members of the WTO. This list will be discussed in Cancun in the WTO's agricultural negotiations (under the heading “market access”). In drawing up the new list, the Commission took account of most of the requests made by Member States at the end of July (see EUROPE of 29 July, p.5) and at the 133 Committee meeting last week (that ended in failure). The list is expected to include Greek Feta cheese, Greek Ouzo (aniseed spirit), French Saint-Emilion wine, and saffron from La Mancha in Spain. Greece's request that Kalamata olives be included was not granted. Greece was the only country last week categorically refusing to endorse the list (which at that point included Feta but not Ouzo or Kalamata olives).
