10/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - 36 MEPs have signed a proposed Parliamentary resolution on the risk of serious infringements to freedom of expression and information rights in Italy, which was presented on 8 July to the Secretary General of the European Parliament, according to a press release. The text notes that Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi “has direct and indirect control” over the whole national system of radio and television broadcasting (public and private), as well as newspapers, publishing houses and advertising companies. This situation, continues the resolution, is added to episodes of discrimination against journalists who criticise the government's actions. Most of the signatories are from the GUE/NGL and Greens/FTA groups, eight have seats with the Socialist group (including Italian Gianni Vattimo), and one with the Liberal group (the Italian Antonio di Pietro). Seven Italians have signed the text.
