Brussels, 10/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, the European Commission filed a complaint with the European Court of Justice against Luxembourg and Austria for their failure to transpose into national law the EU road safety legislation on the technical roadside inspection of the roadworthiness of commercial vehicles circulating the Union. The directive in question, which should have been transposed by 10 August 2002 at the latest, aims to strengthen road safety and improve the safety and environmental performance of heavy commercial vehicles circulating in or crossing over EU territory. To achieve this, in addition to annual technical inspections, it imposes random roadside checks on a representative number of commercial vehicles. Those that are not conform may be banned from circulation on EU roads, wherever they were registered.
