Brussels, 03/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament has slightly amended the common position of the Council in view of the adoption of a directive on harmonising Member State legislation on car mirrors and supplementary indirect vision systems (second reading, codecision). By approving the report by Italian, Giuseppe Gargani (EPP/ED), Parliament has in effect adopted an EPP-ED amendment demanding the European Commission to present as soon as possible, following the adoption of the current directive, a proposal to the Economic Committee of the United Nations to align the provisions in its regulation on the subject on those in the directive.
The draft directive aims to strengthen road passenger safety by improving the performance of mirrors and by speeding up the introduction of new technologies for increasing drivers' indirect vision in private cars, buses and lorries. It also adds supplementary provisions to reduce the problems of blind spots in the existing directive on car mirrors.
