Brussels, 17/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament's Committee on the Environment voted by a slim majority (28 votes to 26 and 1 abstention) for a committee of inquiry, or temporary committee, to be set up by the Parliament in order to elucidate the causes of the Prestige oil tanker disaster. With the adoption on Tuesday by a more comfortable majority (34 for, 21 against and 1 abstention) of the report by French Green member Marie Anne Isler Béguin on the European Commission's communication on the Prestige oil tanker disaster, the parliamentary committee also calls for European emergency plans to be set in place for Community coasts, a voluntary work framework, and a European epidemiological study on populations exposed to fuel oil.
