12/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - To coincide with the Council's attempts to strike political agreement on reform, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Oxfam and BEUC (the European Consumers Organisation) issued a joint press release calling for root and branch reform of the Common Agriculture Policy (CAP). They call for the end of export subsidies (which lead to dumping), greater rural development and a move to less intensive and more environmentally friendly farming methods that favour higher quality products. In a press release, the Confederation of the Food and Drink Industries of the EU (CIAA) said it favoured a continuation of the CAP reform process, the gradual opening of the CAP to market forces and boosting the competitiveness of agri-food products in the EU and outside. It supports the decoupling of aid as long as its impact on various types of farming is taken into account.
