11/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Women's Lobby is disappointed by the draft Articles in the future constitution presented by the Presidium of the Convention, criticising it for not having strengthened sexual equality in the treaty when in fact equality between men and women was due to be inscribed in the draft as on of the European Union's values. The Women's Lobby is also calling for "Integrating a strong article on the elimination of sex discrimination in the first part of the draft Constitutional Treaty". Mary McPhail, General Secretary of the Women's Lobby warned, "We believe that further neglect of this issue by the Convention may greatly jeopardise the acceptance of European women, voters and citizens of a constitutional text".
