Brussels, 11/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has given its blessing to a UK government plan to back the transformation of contaminated or brownfield land, the "Support for Land Remediation" scheme. It will free up land formerly not suitable for development and hence reduce pressure on greenfield land, will help environmental protection and revive business in derelict areas without affecting trade between Member States, notes the Commission. Recently released figures indicate that around 66,000 hectares of contaminated, brownfield and derelict land is available for redevelopment in the UK. The government will make available grants of up to 100% of the eligible costs (costs of the work minus the increase in the value of the land.
