Amsterdam, 04/06/2003 (Agence Europe) - British Labour MEP Richard Corbett has suggested that the European Parliament no longer hold twelve sessions a year in Strasbourg, but meet in Brussels where it has all the facilities it requires. He suggests that European Councils be held in Strasbourg where the EP building (currently used for less than 50 days a year) could easily be adapted to hold summits. It would be a good idea to hold the European Council a long way from Brussels, he explained, because it has to be kept separate from the EU's day-to-day procedures, argues Corbett. This would give Strasbourg as much benefit and prestige as the EP sessions and would enable savings of EUR 150 million to be made in the EP's budget, and EUR 2 million in the European Commission's budget. He highlighted the wonderful hospitality of the inhabitants of Strasbourg. Corbett was speaking at a meeting of the Party of European Socialists in Amsterdam.
