Brussels, 14/05/2003 (Agence Europe) - A conference on audiovisual media was held on 11 and 12 May in Corfu, under the Greek Presidency of the Union. Opening the debate, Press and Mass Media Minister, Christos Protopapas, indicated that the aim of the conference was to "seek an answer for a balance between the viability and social role of the media, and a balance in the competitiveness of television". Referring to the "television without borders" (TVWB) dossier, the President of the Audiovisual Council underlined the presence of "new challenges and concerns. For this reason", continued Mr Protopapas, "we must now prove that the European institutions also have endurance, but also the depth and quality to make the necessary steps of progress". Still on the subject of the TVWB directive, the Commission representative, Emmanuel Jolie, pointed out that it had to be "reformed and improved", and that for this reason, the Commission was accepting proposals to this end until 15 June.
