Strasbourg, 14/05/2003 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday morning, the EP will discuss the report by José Garcia-Margallo on the broad economic policy guidelines from 2003 to 2005. Discussion was also to cover the report by Hermann Schmid, Swedish elected member of the European United Left/Nordic Greens Left Group, on guidelines for employment. But this will not be the case, and the Council will discuss this matter on 3 June without having officially heard the Parliament's position. Mr Schmid gave this explanation at a press conference for his group. Two positions were opposed to the meeting of the employment committee on Monday evening, Mr Schmid said. One position was in favour of keeping the Lisbon strategy with strong social anchoring of economic decisions, and there is the vision of those who consider that, at the present time, priority should be given to reducing salary costs. The atmosphere was somewhat heated, Mr Schmid commented, adding that his work to find a compromise had remained without result.
