Brussels, 07/05/2003 (Agence Europe) - The thirtieth EP "Passport for Freedom" (denouncing the breach of humanitarian law and failure to respect the Geneva Convention) has been awarded to a captain in the Moroccan royal armed forces, Mimoun Zeggai, who has been a prisoner of war since 13 April 1976 in Algeria. He was taken prisoner during the Western Sahara conflict. This is the last "symbolic" stage in preparing a dossier with a view to Mr Zeggai's release (as well as that of 1160 Moroccan soldiers who have been held in Tindouf camps for the past 25 years). Mr Zeggai's daughter was officially given the "passport" in Brussels on 6 May in the presence of the representative for the Moroccan community of Belgium. The thirteen signatory MEPs undertake to provide assistance in the negotiation phase with the Algerian government. Daniel Ducarme (Belgian Liberal), the "godfather" of the prisoner today aged 62, assured reporters that the EP did not intend adopting an "aggressive attitude toward the Algerian government" and that MEPs only have a "liaison role between the authorities concerned".
