Brussels, 05/05/2003 (Agence Europe) - During its meeting on 7 and 8 May, the European Convention Praesidium is above all to examine how to organise the work of the Convention in this final phase, mainly to allow the Praesidium to react to the unfolding of the debate and to the various components in order to have a more "interactive" dialogue, Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut, spokesperson, told reporters on Monday. Regarding the possibility of extending work over and beyond 20 June, so that the Convention presents draft articles in July or September on the second part of the Treaty, Mr Meyer-Landrut recalled that the Praesidium has already proposed articles on this second part (mainly on CFSP, ESDP and JHA themes). Furthermore, he doubted that the Convention is seeking consensus at its plenary on 30 and 31 May when a full text will be presented (with preamble, Charter, etc.). On the subject of the possible reference to religious values, Mr Meyer-Landrut recalled that, according to several members of the Praesidium, such a reference could only appear in the preamble. On the institutional issues which will be discussed at the plenary session on 15 and 16 May, to the question of whether this was the first time that the Praesidium received amendments from members (in this case, Messrs Barnier, Vitorino, Mendez de Vigo and Hänsch), the spokesperson noted that the members of the Praesidium have always expressed their views, although not necessarily through amendments.
