Brussels, 04/04/2003 (Agence Europe) - The President of the Republic of Cyprus has rejected the proposals of the Turkish Cypriot leader and has asked him to attend UN discussion on the basis of the plan outlined by Kofi Annan (see EUROPE yesterday). In a letter that does not respond directly to the six point plan proposed on Wednesday by the Turkish Cypriot leader, Tassos Papadopoulos indicated that he would only agree to discussion if Rauf Denktash, "accepted the Plan of the United Nations Secretary General as a basis for negotiating". The President coldly stresses that he does not share the point of vice of the Turkish Cypriot leader, according to which, the failure of the "last chance" session on 11 March in The Hague by Kofi Annan was due to the "socio-psychological dimension" of the issue or the "especially deep crisis of confidence between the two sides". Mr Papadopoulos, on the contrary, like Kofi Annan himself, that the failure was due to Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots refusal to accept the United Nations plan as the basis for discussions. Because of the failure of inter-Cypriot discussions, the Greek side of the island will be the only part that will sign the accession treaty to the European Union in mid-April.
